What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Have you tried to lose weight on your own through diet and exercise, but haven’t been as successful as you’d hoped? Struggling with excess weight can put a significant amount of strain on your body. Sore muscles and stiff joints are some of the most commonly reported problems. Being overweight or obese can lead to certain conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack (from high cholesterol), sleep apnea, and even cancer. Obesity can even increase your risk of developing depression by 55%.
Fortunately, losing weight from bariatric surgery can help improve these health conditions:
- Osteoarthritis (bone and joint pain)
- Heart failure
- Stroke and heart attack risk
- Cholesterol levels
- Sleep apnea
- High blood pressure
- Type 2 diabetes
- Depression
- Anxiety
Gastric bypass in Mexico with ALO Bariatrics can help you achieve a healthier life and support you in your journey for optimal health. Most patients lose around 70% of their excess weight in the first year after surgery.
Call Us Today
Gastric bypass is the most effective weight loss surgery available. Patients who receive gastric bypass in Mexico can lose more than a pound a day in the first year after surgery.
How it works:
The surgery involves creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach that holds a significantly smaller amount of food when you eat. Part of the small intestines are also rerouted, altering the absorption of your food. The procedure is considered malabsorptive and restrictive. Malabsorptive, because you won’t absorb calories like you used to, and restrictive, because you won’t be able to eat as much as you did before.
The malabsorptive and restrictive components of this surgery work together to reduce the number of calories your body absorbs from your diet.
ALO Bariatrics has performed thousands of gastric bypass surgeries with great success. Our skilled surgeons use minimally invasive techniques that reduce the risk of complications and allow for a safe recovery.
Gastric bypass surgery involves reducing stomach capacity and rerouting the small intestine to limit overeating and decrease the number of calories the body absorbs.

The Gastric Bypass Procedure
A STEP-BY-STEP LOOK
Consultation
The process of your weight loss journey starts with a free consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons. We offer free phone consultations, so you don’t have to come into our office until your surgery is scheduled.
Anesthesia
On the day of your surgery, general anesthesia will be administered to you by a certified anesthesiologist. Anesthesia ensures that you’re unconscious during the entire process for a virtually painless treatment.
Small Intestine Operation
Next, your small intestine is attached to the stomach pouch. Food will bypass the larger portion of your stomach, going directly from your stomach pouch to your small intestine for digestion. The smaller portion of the stomach is also attached to a lower part of the small intestine so it can continue to provide digestive fluids. The incisions are closed after these changes are complete.
Stomach Operation
For the first part of the surgery, the doctor will focus on dividing your stomach into large and small sections. The stomach pouch, which is about the size of a walnut, is closed and reinforced with staples. While a normal stomach holds around three pints of food, your new stomach pouch will hold about one ounce. These changes are made using small, highly articulate surgical tools. A laparoscope, which is a small camera on the end of a flexible tube, will give the surgeon a high-definition view of the surgical site.
Creating Incisions
Our bariatric surgeons use a minimally invasive surgical technique involving an abdominal incision that is less than a centimeter long.
Recovery
Gastric bypass is an in-patient procedure, so you’ll be closely monitored by our staff for a day or two before you return to your hotel room.

Healing From Gastric Bypass
Take Medication
Prescription pain medication is included in your surgical fees to keep any post-surgery pain and discomfort under control. Discomfort is a normal side effect we will help you manage.
Rest and Heal
Rest following surgery is highly important for an efficient recovery. That's why we include your hotel stay in the overall cost of your visit. Relax at the Tijuana Marriott and avoid strenuous activities.
Walk Regularly
To avoid blood clots and promote good circulation, patients should walk a little each day. Avoid heavy lifting and high-intensity exercise, but continue to move around and walk little by little.
Take Time Away From Work
Thanks to our minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, many patients can return to work after only two to four weeks. However, if your job relies on physical labor, you may need to take additional time off.
Technology & Techniques
Our gastric bypass surgeries use minimally invasive techniques, sophisticated equipment, and refined preventative measures to ensure your safety, comfort, and success in gastric bypass surgery.
Stapler and Staples
Our medical-grade staples and staplers are by Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s most trusted brands in medicine. We also always reinforce the staple line to prevent any leaks.
Laparoscopic Technology
Our doctors can use minimally invasive techniques using a laparoscope. This small camera provides the surgeon with a high-definition view of the treatment site, eliminating the need for large incisions.
Leak Tests
Your safety is the top priority for our doctors. This is why we perform three leak tests throughout your time in the hospital. We’ll perform one during surgery and two the following day.
