A Patient Shares Their Positive Experience
ABOUT MEDICAL TOURISM IN MEXICO
“I can honestly say I had a great experience, from getting picked up until the day I left. Eduardo our driver was very nice and friendly I’m very grateful. The hotel we stayed at was nice and clean and the staff were helpful, courteous and friendly. The day of the surgery got to the hospital was very clean and nice. Yes you can tell they are doing some remodeling outside but the inside was very clean and nice. Everyone I met at the hospital were nice and friendly as well. I met Dr. Alejandro he was very nice. Every Dr. I met and had a conversation with were very helpful and very nice people. Even after the surgery the nurses and staff were always very attentive at all times. I would lie if I said I had a bad experience due to it being the whole opposite of that. I would definitely recommend Dr. Alejandro for this procedure. I thank the nurses, drivers, staff, and anyone else who I did not mention. Thank you so much for your hospitality and for taking care of us the way y’all did God bless!”
About Gastric Bypass Surgery
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is one of the best-known surgical weight loss options.
During gastric bypass surgery, a patient’s stomach is divided into two parts. The first part is a small stomach pouch that food will pass through. The lower portion of the small intestine is rerouted to connect to this smaller stomach pouch. The second part of the stomach is rerouted to connect to the small intestine so bile and pancreatic fluid can aid in digestion.
HOW IT MAKES WEIGHT LOSS HAPPEN
Gastric bypass surgery results in a combination of restrictive and malabsorptive weight loss.
Thanks to the smaller stomach pouch, a patient’s food intake is restricted. That means less food and fewer calories can be consumed during a meal. And since part of the small intestine is bypassed, the patient also absorbs fewer calories when their food is digested.

How Much Weight Will I Lose
FROM GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY?
Gastric Bypass Candidacy
Gastric bypass surgery can help people with obesity or morbid obesity. There are a few key things our bariatric surgeons look for when determining if it’s a good surgery for you:
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Most gastric bypass surgery patients have a BMI of 40 or over. In addition, these patients are typically at least 100 pounds over their ideal weight.
Limited Success with Previous Weight Loss
Obesity Comorbidities
Distal Bypass Surgery:
A Gastric Bypass Variation
In addition to standard Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, there is a variation known as distal bypass surgery.
A distal bypass still involves the creation of a smaller stomach pouch and rerouting of the intestine. The difference is that even more of the small intestine is bypassed during the procedure, further reducing calorie absorption during digestion.

FROM A PATIENT AT OUR PUERTO VALLARTA FACILITY
“Very thorough communication, transportation from and to airport was provided. I went to PV for surgery, hotel was convenient to everything you could need. Dr was top notch, as well as the whole staff I came into contact with. I’m 3 years post op and still have a line of communication when needed. Still responsive. The hospital is so clean I would eat off the floor. I couldn’t recommend this more highly than I do. And if you are nervous, reach out to them! They will answer all of your questions! I’d do it all over again!”

Scarring After Gastric Bypass Surgery
There is minimal scarring after a gastric bypass thanks to the use of less invasive laparoscopic techniques. The incisions are small and hard to notice. In fact, many patients can wear bathing suits and outfits that expose their midriff without any noticeable scarring.
By following your postoperative instructions, you can ensure that the scars from these small incisions will fade significantly.
Maintaining Your Weight Loss Results
Eat a Well-Balanced Diet
A nutritious and well-balanced diet is the cornerstone of long-term weight loss results. In addition to picking a good variety of healthy foods, be sure to chew thoroughly and savor your meals to avoid overeating.
Use Supplements as Directed
Malabsorption during digestion can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Gastric bypass patients can take vitamins and other nutritional supplements to address these potential nutritional deficiencies.
Exercise and Keep Active
In addition to a good diet, you can maintain a healthy body weight by exercising regularly and staying active each day. Consider creating a sustainable workout routine that will work for you.
Make Sure to Stay Hydrated
Drinking water between meals has two key benefits for weight maintenance. First, hydration ensures your body works efficiently. Second, hydrating can help control hunger and prevent snacking between meals.
Emotional Support for Your Journey
Speak with your friends and family about your feelings during this time. You can also consult with mental health professionals to address the changes you’re going through.
Other Bariatric Procedures
Gastric Sleeve
Also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, the gastric sleeve procedure involves permanently reducing the size of the stomach to a pouch about the size of a banana. This restricts calorie consumption and helps reduce sensations of hunger.
Gastric Bypass
This procedure combines a gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery. A duodenal switch reduces the size of the stomach to reduce calorie consumption while also bypassing a portion of the intestine to reduce the number of calories absorbed during the digestion process.
Duodenal Switch
Also known as gastric banding, Lap-Band involves the use of an adjustable silicone ring to reduce the size of the stomach. Gastric bands are completely reversible and can be converted into other bariatric procedures as needed.
