AFTER A GASTRIC SLEEVE?
What Is SADI-S?
Duodenal switch procedures start with a sleeve gastrectomy, the removal of 80% of the stomach. The surgeon then reroutes the intestines to shorten the path your food takes.
SADI-S is a similar procedure. It starts with a sleeve gastrectomy, then the new stomach sleeve is sewn to a loop of the small intestine to bypass most of the bowel.
The main difference between the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch and SADI-S procedures is the single anastomosis (reconnection within the gastrointestinal tract). While duodenal switch requires two, SADI-S requires just one.
How SADI-S Aids in Weight Loss
Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive weight loss procedure, meaning it reduces the amount of food your stomach can hold. It helps you feel fuller faster, and with less food. It also removes the part of the stomach that produces most of your ghrelin, the hunger hormone, lowering your appetite.
The gastric bypass portion of the surgical procedure reroutes the intestines to result in a malabsorptive effect, so your body absorbs fewer calories.
This combination leads to consistent, healthy, and sustainable weight loss.
The Benefits of SADI-S
Faster, Simpler, and Safer Surgery
When compared to gastric bypass and duodenal switch, SADI-S is easier and faster to perform. Because SADI-S requires less rerouting of the intestines and only has a single anastomosis, patients experience faster surgery times and reduced risk of intestinal leakage.

FAQ
Can SADI-S be used as a revision surgery?
Yes. If you've received a bariatric surgery in the past, but aren't experiencing the results you hoped for, SADI-S can be used to modify your existing procedure to aid in further weight loss or address weight regain. SADI-S can be used as both a primary bariatric surgery and a revision.
Does SADI-S require one procedure or two?
The SADI-S procedure can be completed in a single surgery or split into two appointments for the sleeve gastrectomy and the bypass. What's best for you will depend on your goals and weight. Very obese patients may benefit more from scheduling their appointments months apart because this will allow them time to lose weight between surgeries, lowering risk factors.
What dietary changes must I make?
In addition to abiding by a special diet in the weeks after your single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass, you will have to eat smaller portions of food and take vitamin and mineral supplements for the rest of your life.
