Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Sleeve
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Gastric Sleeve
Gastric sleeve works by removing about 80 percent of your stomach. The smaller stomach that remains will significantly limit the amount of food you can consume, which leads to dramatic weight loss. It is called a "sleeve" because the remaining portion of your stomach, which is about the size of a banana, resembles a sleeve.
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y, separates your stomach into one small and one large portion, then redirects your digestive tract by connecting the smaller stomach to the lower section of your small intestine. This form of bariatric surgery is both restrictive and malabsorptive, which leads to rapid weight loss.
Duodenal Switch
A duodenal switch is a combination of gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. During this surgery, a large portion of your stomach is removed. The small intestine is then rerouted, much like in gastric bypass surgery.

The Process
OF ROUX-EN-Y
Consultation
You will first set up a free phone consultation with our Guadalajara offices. We can determine if you are a good candidate for gastric bypass surgery or if another option would be better suited to your needs.
Preparation
After your phone consultation, our friendly bilingual staff will help you plan for your trip and surgery. You will be checked into a clean, modern hotel, and we will arrange for one of our experienced drivers to take you to and from the airport and the hospital.
Anesthesia
On the day of your surgery, general anesthesia will be administered so you remain asleep and comfortable throughout the entire laparoscopic procedure.
Incisions
Using laparoscopic techniques, your surgeon will make small incisions in your abdomen and insert a small camera, which will provide a view of the treatment area on a video monitor. Next, small surgical instruments will be inserted into the incisions.
Separation
Your surgeon will separate the stomach into one large stomach pouch and one small stomach pouch. Medical-grade staples will be used to close and reinforce the lining of the small stomach pouch to prevent any leaking.
Redirecting
The small intestine will be attached to the small stomach pouch. Part of your small intestine will be connected to the large stomach pouch to aid digestion.
Recovery
Following your surgery, you will remain closely monitored in our hospital for one to two days until you can return to your hotel room.

Maintain Your Results
AFTER GASTRIC BYPASS?
Limit Protein
Since your stomach is a fraction of the size it was previously, it is recommended that you limit the amount of protein you consume. Excess protein could result in excess calories, which could compromise your weight loss efforts.
Eat Efficiently
You will not be able to consume as much food as you were previously. This means each time you eat, it needs to be strictly for nutrition. Avoid snacking or eating when you are bored, and focus on only eating when you are hungry.
Avoid Empty Calories
Providing your body the nutrients it needs to perform is of the utmost importance after this surgery. Try to avoid empty calories like alcohol, soda, and sweets, as these will give you the feeling of being full without providing any nutritional value.
Stay Hydrated
Water is one of the keys to keeping our bodies healthy. You should drink plenty of water throughout the day but try to avoid drinking it in excess immediately before or after a meal.
Take Vitamins
Because this surgery shortens your small intestine, it limits the number of nutrients you absorb. Multi-vitamins must be taken to ensure your body is functioning at its best.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Food Can My Stomach Hold After Surgery?
The small stomach pouch that is created during gastric bypass surgery can only hold around one ounce of food. For comparison, a normal stomach can hold around three pints.
How Long Is Recovery?
While your exterior incisions will only need around two weeks to heal, your stomach will need 6 to 8. You should start to regain some energy at around three weeks and by then, you can start to slowly get back into your daily routines.
How Much Weight Will I Lose?
Every patient is different, and your lifestyle habits and diet will have a major impact on your long-term weight loss. On average, morbidly obese patients will lose around half of their body weight or more over a two-year period.
Are There Any Risks?
Every surgery comes with its own set of risks. When you choose an experienced board-certified surgeon who practices in certified hospitals like the ones we use in Guadalajara, you greatly minimize your risk of developing complications. Our team takes every precaution to reduce the risk of complications or adverse side effects.
Is Gastric Bypass Reversible?
No. This is a life-long commitment to weight loss and cannot be undone. Patients need to be committed to lifestyle changes that promote healthy living to make the results of this surgery last.
Distal Bypass Surgery
A SOLUTION FOR WEIGHT GAIN AFTER GASTRIC BYPASS
Have you undergone a gastric bypass procedure only to eventually gain weight? Our surgeons can help determine if distal bypass is a good way to meet your needs.
This procedure essentially involves bypassing a larger portion of the small intestine in order to further reduce calorie absorption.
Whether you are considering your first bariatric surgery or have failed to achieve your goals through bariatric surgery in the past, our surgeons are here to provide the best solution for your needs.
